Multiple psychological thoughts have been expressed concerning the most detrimental mistake ever committed by people. My firm conviction in this regard is that the gravest error that can be ever made by a common individual is improper career choice. As Steve Jobs remarkably said, Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Indeed, waking up every day and feeling that you are not enthusiastic about what you are doing, sensing this distinguished feeling of personal disapprove of your own endeavors is one of the most effective personal destructors.
Having carefully analyzed my lifestyle, my personal beliefs, and convictions, I have inferred that my professional vacation is in the field of the fashion industry. Considering my academic background as a marketing specialist and my hobbies, which include music, shopping, traveling, and sports, I have realized that working as a business consultant and advisor in the fashion industry can be deemed as the most professionally and socially acceptable career opportunity for me as a young professional.
No matter how calm this industry may seem to be, the realities thereof precisely suggest that it is overfull with traditional business related aspects, including stresses, multifarious ethical challenges, communicational problems, industry related disputes, and other issues of top importance.
Furthermore, it should be contextualized particularly that the professionals that occupy administrative positions in the industry should be considered as destiny deciders for the majority of the models engaged in this business. The studies indicate that once a model is out of business; no other viable career opportunities are available for him/her. This tenet of the industry accentuates the need of permanent analysis of ethical considerations.
Overall, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate that my internal predispositions, hobbies, and professional background make me an eligible candidate for becoming the fashion industry business analyst. The focus of the paper is made on the ethical side of the issue.
Gifts, Passions, and Circumstances
I feel immense personal inclination to shopping, music, and active socialization with my friends that make me a perfect candidate for working in the analyzed area. The firm theoretical opinion in this regard is that those, who are really dedicated to and passionate about their vocation, are more likely to succeed in its fulfillment.
Therefore, I am sure that my fashion addiction can be positively utilized in the solidification of my career aspirations. Some people criticize fashion addictiveness as a negative phenomenon. However, personally I consider it a positive trait that can facilitate my future career as the fashion industry business advisor significantly since it is impossible to succeed in any area without having deep passion for it.
Moreover, I try to keep proactive lifestyle, socializing with my future colleagues and friends actively. Contemporary business analytical luminaries agree that the most important factor in effective career building is nothing, but efficient communication. While particular skills needed for business advisory task implementation can be obtained through practice, effective communicational traits are considered innate. Therefore, possessing them makes me an eligible candidate for working as a business advisor in the fashion industry since namely this industry is one of the most saturated in terms of communication.
Furthermore, I always try to stay technologically updated, tracking recent technological trends and their application in the industry. One of the most important tasks commonly confronted by business advisors engaged in different fields is cost-reduction. Nowadays, with the advent of the technological era, the implementation of the concerned technological solutions seems to be the shortest way to accomplishing this task, although sometimes this practice can be ethically questionable. Therefore, I believe that my technological passion can contribute significantly to my growth as a professional.
Ethical Aspect
Ethical issues are traditionally strongly associated with legal practice and top-level corporate structures activities. Therefore, the importance of ethical considerations in the fashion industry is reported to be routinely disregarded by all industry stakeholders generally and the fashion industry business advisors in particular. However, my firm conviction is that ethical issues should be prioritized, and ethical approach should be cultivated in this area, as well.
Ethics is often positioned as having a set of procedures that should be followed to find out whether a particular activity should be considered a morally wrong or morally right action. To illustrate, models demonstrating new collections are sometimes fired. I realized that when I occupy the position of the fashion industry business advisor in the future, I will have to advice which model should be fired. In this regard, I strongly believe that conventional deontological interpretation of ethics is not applicable here since adherence to formal prescriptions can produce incredibly negative results. To illustrate, the practice indicates that the suicide and alcohol abuse rates among the laid-off models are extremely high since they have no sufficient qualifications to get employment in any other industry.
Therefore, considering the high competition rates and general rigorous nature of this business, following consequentialism approach to ethical problem interpretation is highly recommended. Before any ethical dilemma is resolved, the possible outcome should be analyzed meticulously. A particular course of action may be considered ethical only in case it leads to positive ultimate result. According to the consequentialism viewpoint, if the outcome is negative; such method of problem resolution should be most indispensably avoided although it can be consistent with the written ethical prescriptions.
Ethical Challenges to Be Confronted
Assumedly, my future career growth is closely connected with my ability to resolve the emerging ethical dilemmas. High-profile business in general and fashion industry in particular are known to be replete with a great number of different ethically related issues.
One of the most commonly encountered ethical problems of the industry is a permanent reticent necessity to deny someones requests. As a business advisor, I will be obliged to advice on hundreds of job applications denials, hereby crushing someone’s career aspirations and plans mercilessly. Moreover, in order to improve the business of my future client, I will have to reduce costs and optimize the working cycle. These aspects are indispensably connected with layoffs, contractual disruptions, and other unpleasant, but financially friendly activities. As discussed in the previous paragraph, the most viable strategy in this regard is focusing on the consequentialist interpretation of ethics.
Secondly, one of the most conducive factors to the establishment of the healthy business environment is prioritization of the business objectives over the personal objectives of the stakeholders. Regarding this business area, I assume that sometimes I will be requested to give advice, which will contradict my personal interests. To illustrate, someday the company may appear in great financial straits, and I will be ethically bound to advice company owners not to pay regular annual bonuses to everyone, including myself. In such cases, I believe that deontological approach is to be employed, in order to eradicate any personal bias completely. I fully understand the fact that my future career will be imbued with similar ethical dilemmas, and my aptitude to resolve them correctly and timely will become the crucial factor of effective shaping of my personal professional reputation.
Most Suitable Leadership Style
Having analyzed the existing leadership motives, I arrived at a conclusion that situational leadership is the most applicable strategy for this area. Situational leadership concept purports that a particular group of people becomes managed, when the need of this management arises. While the process remains stable, situational leader does not distinguish himself from the ranks of his fellow employees. When a situation endangering the business cycle arises, he immediately steps forward and starts to implement the most viable strategy to remove the negative repercussions, which can take place hypothetically. To illustrate, model shows are sometimes carried out in Islamic countries, where the employed models can be easily detained by the local police officers for alleged prostitution or other ethically and morally inconsistent behavior, which is criminally punishable in the country. In this event, I will be requested to consult the models and instruct them carefully concerning the actions that are not permissible under the law of the country in question.
Situational leadership is also very apt for this particular type of job since it exempts the leader from any kind of responsibility. While traditionally elected or appointed leaders are accountable and responsible for all their actions, those who become a leader on a situational basis are free from repercussions since their role as a leader vanishes immediately after a critical situation is tackled effectively. In case the situational leader fails to address a particular problem, the criticism is very unlikely to happen since he or she is a volunteer who has tried but failed, not a professional who must never fail (Northhouse, 2013).
Lastly, situational leadership is considered a very effective solution for communicating with the top management. Sometimes, top managers are directly charged with the responsibility to handle specific situations. If they fail, a situational leader who managed the problem effectively is considered a person who does not participate in the problem resolution. Whatever outcome is achieved, its results are attributed to the top manager. Although this practice may seem to be socially unjust, it is beneficial for the career building and professional growth of the situational leader, in the end. Although there will be no direct recognition, these achievements can be appreciated by the company owners or board of directors on a reticent level, making one an eligible candidate for further promotion.
Conclusion
Having summarized the main findings of this paper, it becomes evident that my innate traits and academic propensities condition my further career in the fashion industry. Being naturally penchant for fashion and shopping, I believe that I am completely predisposed for effective career building in this area. Moreover, considering my academic background as a marketing specialist, I believe that a synergistic combination of these traits makes my work in the discussed industry the most desirable and opportune career choice for me.
It is evident that my future practice will be imbued with multiple ethical problems, which should be confronted with the use of the mixed deontological and consequentialist approaches in order to achieve the most socially acceptable outcome.
Finally, I am strongly convinced that situational leadership approach should be followed by me as a fashion business advisor. This leadership strategy helps to get rid of any responsibility, which is inherently connected with leadership; on the other hand, it promotes oneself as a proactive professional and consequently increases the career growth and personal professional gratification.
