City Planner

In developing an energy plan for a metropolitan town/ area, a city planner has to consider some factors. These factors may be based on the following: the source of energy needed, location of the energy plant, input required to set up the energy plant and many more. In determining a source of energy to be used on the metropolitan area, a city planner has to consider the following factors which are vital:

1. The energy source should be renewable in most cases in order to save the costs,

2. The energy source should be environment friendly,

3. It should occupy as little space as possible so as not to be an inconvenience for the people living around the plant,

4. It should produce efficient energy to be used in the area.

The city planner has to make his or her considerations basing on the budget he or she has been given by the government. In this case, the budget given for the first year is $10 billion. This fund is for setting up of the energy plant. $ 1 billion is budgeted for every following year, and this fund is to ensure the completion of the plant. The energy output required in the metropolitan area is 3000 megawatts. In order to reach this amount of energy required, the city planner has to consider at least three options. The best three options of energy sources required to develop the metropolitan area are Hydroelectricity, Geothermal power, and Natural gas.

It is important to give the first priority to geothermal power, because it has got many advantages which will be suitable for the metropolitan area. Some of the benefits of using geothermal power as a source of energy include the following:

1. Geothermal energy is a renewable source of energy. This will help to save on the costs.

2. Geothermal energy is environment friendly, i.e. it does not cause pollution to the environment. At the same time, it does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. This is a very important factor that a city planner should consider in choosing a source of energy.

3. It does not require outside sources of fuel to keep the power houses running.

4. The most important aspect is that geothermal efficiency gives a much more exciting advantage to the frugal homeowner. This is because, once he or she has built the geothermal power station; the energy is almost free. He may only require a little energy to run the pump. He or she can tap into the energy that is already being manufactured to run this duty!

These factors explain why geothermal energy is important while developing a metropolitan area. The geothermal power energy will only make an energy output of 1000 megawatts, but the amount of energy output required is 3000 megawatts. This will now force the city planner to look for other options. Hydroelectricity will definitely be the next option.

This is a renewable source of energy in that it does not consume water. All the water is returned back to its source of origin. This factor is important because it helps to save on the costs. The most exciting thing about hydroelectric power is that it can create energy for 24 hours without the body of water that it is utilizing drying up. Hydroelectric energy is a clean source of energy in that the power plant never produces any wastes in their byproduct during its conversion. When the power is in high demand, the dams constructed shut their gates, hence, conserving water for use.

On many occasions people desire using natural gas because of its immediate heat during cooking and also continuous water heating. Natural gas is applied well in businesses like motels, small manufacturing enterprises, schools , office buildings, and hospitals.

The factors that give natural gas an upper hand over the other sources of energy are explained as follows:

1. Natural gas contains small chains of carbon such as methane and for that reason produces very low carbon discharge emissions. This factor makes natural gas friendlier to the environment than coal or oil.

2. It burns cleaner. Natural gas does not produce any of the following; smoke, ash or smell when burning.

3. It is cheaper to use Natural gas instantly for heating water and even large areas as well as cooking. This provides accurate control and immediate results. There is efficiency when cooking in the oven because you do not require preheating.

4. Precision in kitchens Only a gas permits for accurate temperature control and unlimited heat settings, going from cold to hot to cold instantly.

All these energy sources are required to give an energy output of 3000 megawatts. Below is a chart showing the budget breakdown used to determine the energy proposal.

Renewable energy sources have advantages, and at the same time, they can be disadvantageous to a town or city.

1. The main advantage of renewable energy sources is sustainability. This means that it will never be exhausted.

2. In general, renewable energy amenities need less maintenance than local generators. Their fuel is being acquired mainly from natural and accessible resources thus reducing the expense of operation.

3. The most important factor is that renewable sources of energy are environment friendly. They do not emit a lot of waste products. These wastes may include carbon dioxide or other chemical pollutants.

4. Renewable energy schemes may also bring economic advantages to many regional areas. This is because most schemes are situated away from huge urban places and their environments.

Disadvantages of the renewable sources of energy include the following:

1. It is hard to produce the amounts of electric power that compare to the large ones as those produced by local fossil fuel generators. This implies that there is a need to reduce amount of energy needed or on the other hand build more energy amenities.

2. Reliability of supply is another shortcoming of renewable sources of energy. Renewable energy frequently depends on the weather as its power source. For example, Hydro generators require rain to load dams in order to provide flowing water. Wind turbines require wind for turning the blades. When these resources are not available, the capability to produce energy from them will not be efficient. This may be unpredictable and inconsistent

As the population grows in the area over the years, definitely, there will be a negative effect on the energy plan. As the population grows, the amount of energy required will increase. This will mean that the energy will start being insufficient in the area. Things that the city planner needs to do to assist the area as the population grows are listed below:

1. Stabilizing the population of the area. This significantly lowers the cost of providing energy needs of the area. The earlier the strategies are put in place to encourage decrease in population growth, the higher the potential advantages.

More research is needed into the interaction between population size and other aspects. This influences the cost of energy provision, which includes improvement of more efficient technology and energy storage.
