Introduction
Al Capone was an American hooligan. He led a crime syndicate during the prohibition era. In Chicago, he was the boss of an outlawed group that conducted activities such as smuggling, prostitution, and money laundering. His town of birth is New York city. Al Capones parents were Italian immigrants in the United States. He moved later to Chicago where enjoyed the opportunity to make money via smuggling of alcoholic beverages when they got prohibited. He was engaged in many criminal activities such as bribery of government officials and prostitution. This paper analyses the criminal activities conducted by Al Capone during his life and his final stumble. The paper helps to understand the methods used in criminal activities during that time and the possible loopholes found in the law that enhanced criminal activities during the life of Al Capone.
Al Capones Life in Chicago
Capone left the East coast and headed towards Chicago. In Chicago, he was trying to establish his career of a renown hooligan. Capone worked for the Chicago crime boss called Johnny Torrio. In fact, he got to know a lot from Torrio. This was a place where criminals could visit prostitutes, gamble, and drink alcohol. After some time, Torrio charged Capone with a lot of criminal works. This raised the rank of Capone in the organization of Torrio. Torrio moved his headquarters to Chicagos suburb of Cicero after Chicagos administration was headed by a new mayor, who was extremely vigilant to fight crime rates in the city during those times (Nate, 2010). Capone was a hugely valuable asset in Torrios criminal gang. He established many gambling dens in Chicago at that time, and this was a serious way that increased rates of crime in Chicago. In fact, Torrio handed over the entire organization to Al Capone after finding out that Capone executed the qualities of a criminal gang boss.
Al Capone became the boss of this criminal gang and began getting hunted by Dion Obanions friend. Dion Obanion was a business associate of Torrio, who had been killed by Capone because he had proved to be unfaithful and not loyal to Torrios gang. The hunt by Obanions loyal friend stirred some fear in Capones life. Therefore, Capone improved his personal safety. As a result, Capone became cautious of any information and other issues pertaining his personal safety. On the other hand, Torrio did not take safety measures, and he got attacked outside his home (Luciano, 2003). This attack nearly killed him and made officially hand over his leadership to Capone, in 1925.
Capone was only 26 years old, and he was in charge of a powerful criminal organization. This organization had night clubs, brothels, race tracks, restaurants, speakeasies, gambling dens, and brewery distilleries. As a serious crime boss, Capone received the attention of the public in Chicago. In fact, he was a substantial supporter of the economy in Chicago since a lot of money was flowing in his organization. In terms of personality traits, Capone was a highly generous person, and he helped the needy. Sometimes he helped the people who turned into prostitution to feed their families (Fred, 2004).
Capone was a killer and murderer. He personally murdered many people; the exact numbers are not known. The most infamous mass killing conducted by Capone was the St. Valentine s Day massacre. On that day, Capones follower Jack Mc Gurn tried to lure George Moran, who was a leader of the rival gang, so that he could kill him. During this ordeal, seven of Morans men got shot at the garage. This massacre brought Capone to the attention of the federal government. On further investigations, they exposed his tax evasion deals and other unlawful
activities in Chicago (John, 1971).
Al Capones Conviction and Imprisonment
The Bureau of prohibition began a probe on Al Capone and his businesses in Chicago. They initiated the investigations in an attempt to convict him for unlawful activity. A case got filed against Capone being charged with income tax evasion. He attempted to bribe and intimidate potential jurors. This got noticed, and the Jury listening to his case got changed. This followed a long trial on Oct 17th, 1929. The judge sentenced Capone to 11 years of imprisonment. At that time, this was the greatest sentence ever given in the United States for tax evasion. He tried to appeal against the conviction and the punishment against him, but both got denied. In prison, he got isolated and did not contact with other prisoners. This was a preventive measure to ensure that he would not commit any dangerous acts (Diane, 2002).
Conclusion
From the foregoing, it is manifestly clear that Capone was a long time criminal boss, and he was engaged in many illegal dealings and killings. The Criminal Justice agents should be extra vigilant to deal with organized crime and kill criminal gangs. The life of Al Capone is a mock to the system of law that was used in Chicago during his time. This is because the law hardly punished him or made attempts to keep him on toes. When he got convicted, it was too late. Capone had caused irreparable harm to the society of Chicago and America at large. It is noteworthy that the Investigating agencies and students across the world should analyze the harms caused by a dysfunctional system of law that could not resist the activity of criminal gangs.
